Objectives

Sydney Airport is enhancing its Customer Experience, capacity, and operational efficiency through a robust Capital Works Portfolio following the COVID-19 downturn. The Enterprise Project Management Office oversees this portfolio, focusing on governance and scalability. The aim was to ensure the revised framework is scalable for a growing portfolio, leveraging existing policies and procedures to improve current operations.

Project Advisory Group are involved in:

  • Moving from a 4-stage gating process to an 8-stage process

  • Revising the role of the Sponsor and providing training and coaching to support the capability uplift

  • Realigning our Governance Structure to enable the 8-stage process and embed more control across the organisation

  • Ensuring our tools, templates and systems are updated to support and enable the process

  • Conducting extensive change management to ensure top-down and bottom-up engagement

  • Business-wide engagement required additional resourcing and expertise to ensure alignment in expectations and the capture of business requirements

  • Time pressures and a firm go-live date required prioritisation of items that were to be included in the initial release and the staging of the remaining releases.

Challenges & Opportunities:

  • Business-wide engagement required additional resourcing and expertise to ensure alignment in expectations and the capture of business requirements.

  • Time pressures and firm go-live date required a prioritisation of items that were to be included in the initial release and the staging of the remaining releases.

  • The client had various levels of understanding and project maturity and the Project Advisory team supported an uplift in understanding of key roles and responsibilities across Sydney Airport by using international best practice as a reference.

Key Outcomes & Benefits:

  • Improved visibility of projects as they progress through the lifecycle

  • A governance approval process commensurate to the project's complexity, impact and value

  • Clarity on the level of time and cost accuracy at each stage gate
