West Invest Strategic Business Case- Active Transport for NSW
The project was focused on developing a detail and robust Strategic Business Case for active transport initiatives, as part of the WestInvest programme.
Overview
The project was focused on developing a detail and robust Strategic Business Case for active transport initiatives, as part of the WestInvest programme. This business case aimed to secure finding projects that would improve walking and cycling infrastructure in the Sydney area, enhancing connectivity, accessibility, and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The objective was to present a compelling case for investment in active transport, demonstrating its role in reducing congestion, improving public health, and supporting the shift towards more sustainable urban transport solutions.
Our Approach
The project delivered by our team members had to be delivered in a short timeframe which required precise planning and swift execution across all stages of the business case development.
One of the key challenges was the reliance on accurate and comprehensive geospatial data to inform economic modelling and project viability. This data was critical for just justifying the proposed investments in active transport infrastructure. The availability of high- quality geospatial data proved to be both a challenge and an opportunity, as it allowed for a more data- driven approach to identifying and prioritising projects based on their potential impact and return on investment.
An external challenge arose towards the end of the project, as political shifts led to a change in government, impacting the wider continuation of the Program.
Key Outcomes
Despite the tight timeframes, the Strategic Business Case was completed on schedule, showcasing the team’s ability to manage complex tasks within constrained timelines.
By integrating detailed geospatial data into the business case, the project successfully demonstrated how investments in active transport could address how investments in active transport could address key transport challenges and align with broader urban planning goals. The use of data allowed for a more transparent and evidence-based presentation of the benefits, making a strong case for funding.
The business case was shortlisted for WestInvest funding, reflecting its quality and the strength of the arguments presented for active transport investment.
